My Little Rent-A-Dog
Chelsea is a very special dog in my life - I met her and her owners Michael and Sarah Neve at the Georgina Kennel Club Dog show when Chelsea was 6 months old - and what I saw was one very frightened young lady - in fact she was more than frightened she was white with fear. I adopted them right there and then, helped them with the ring and convinced them to come to the farm to allow their dog to do what she was bred to do, find and point birds.
The first time they came was Xmas day that year to give her a run to quiet her down because they were spending the day with their family, then from there they started pointing dog training. To say Michael and Sarah were tree huggers was putting it mildly and from there the two of them have become fine handlers of dogs, fabulous helpers, great barn cleaners, photographers and friends.
I convinced them to get a show title on Chelsea, then pushed them into getting her to the U.S., Chelsea has a way of really pulling off the big ones, and took winners bitch and best of winners at the American Summer Nationals for a 5 pt. major and went on to finish her title the following spring with another 5 pt. major.
To say chelsea was anything but a hooligan would be an understatement - she managed to fail more junior hunt tests, and F.D. tests for control than any dog I've ever met - but I insisted we continue with her and finally completed her F.D.J. (junior hunt title). We persisted with her, and as electric as she was in the field she also was a devil - but I was sure that in the end she would complete the F.D. title, and we did - in August, 2008 I drove her to Ottawa to compete on grounds she didn't know, and she finally passed the last leg with a score of 91 and a perfect mark on pointing - not bad for the hooligan. She still managed to scream all the way to the start of the test which was about 1/4 mile - quite the gal, well at least she knows how to embarrass me. So now its onto FDX, well we are going to at least give it a try - I will be hunting her this fall and giving friends the joy of hunting over a broke pointing dog. It may have taken us time to get this wild child under control, but she is now a dog anyone would want to hunt over.

Chelsea on point Taz, Tess, Ben and Chelsea
Sarah got involved in obedience with chelsea and got two legs of her C.D. - a year went by and I realized she wasn't going to finish this little girl so I asked if I could - so I entered her one day in the spring 2007 and finished her C.D. with a fine score.
Since then life and a baby got in the way, Sarah had trained chelsea to the C.D.X. level and when my dog Tess got sick I asked if I could trial Chelsea. We spent a month working together and went out and got her C.D.X. 3 straight - oh yes she tried to pull her stunts, but in the end managed very good scores. Chelsea has now gone on to Utility training and with any luck we will add that title to her resume some time in the future.
I have been so blessed to have such a tremendous dog in my life, a dog that I can take anywhere and that I adore, and who has fulfilled all the dreams I have had for her - she is also Tess' best friend so we borrow her a lot to keep tess happy. For a dog that was bought as a pet she certainly has been something special and I'm truly thankful to Sarah and Michael for allowing me to take their girl and compete with her in all venues and also for being such loyal and great friends.
